Heterosexism and Heroic Hypocrisy in the Movement

I always acknowledge James Baldwin’s profound brilliance, but he always gives rise in my mind to a quandary and not so much about him personally, but about those who call themselves revolutionaries and invoke him, who are often simultaneously denigrating the humanity of him and people like him with heterosexist discourse. People like Rustin, Baldwin, Hansberry fought the good fight and paid the supreme price for a degree of freedom. Such a shame that now, while they are invoked as great heroes, they are denigrated in the actions and words of many of those who claim to be inheriting their struggle. Certainly these individuals would not have fought for a freedom of any kind that did not include their own humanity.
