The Lust for “Debate”

We as a people spend too much time coming to forums where we need to learn and do serious work together, hyped up for “debate.” Its the same impulse that makes some of our young smack someone and run and film it. We have been socialized to find amusement and mental stimulation from debate and argument and conflict. Most of it nonproductive. That is a Eurocentric political idea. That’s why they always have a “devil’s advocate.” Thesis-Antithesis-Synthesis they teach us. You have to always consider the opposite. In the Afrikan tradition, if the opposite is just wrong, or not productive towards the objective, to spend time debating it is foolishness and if the people are in need during the time you do that, traitorous.
