True love is made manifest when it persists through pain and suffering. Why? Because its easy to love someone and yourself and even God when things are good or seem to be. When physically, mentally, and emotionally you are fine and “they” are fine. But when you or the one you love is sick or impoverished or depressed or whatever it is, professing love gets hard. Showing it, even harder. But that’s when it must be professed and shown most of all. That’s when the transformative, life-saving power of love is most effective and necessary. Otherwise, its not truly selfless love.
