If you kill or permanently damage a woman in Afrikan tradition, you destroy our community, for she is the first teacher of them and the repository of our cultures. For if it is her body you maim, she cannot bear the children that will bring forth the ideas for our liberation. If you damage her mind, she may bring them forth, but then destroy them, hating her own, for what you have done to her. If it is her spirit, they may come, but they will be broken in advance and weakened and in the end destroy their own. So as horrible as the violence against our men is from all sources, the violence against our women remains worse because the violence against our men can be avenged by a next, wiser generation. The violence against women, without recompense, seeds a self-loathing and disrespect that can destroy any such chance at collective ethical resurrection.
