It is often said that “reading is fundamental.” True, but too many read to ideologically respond to what’s said, attempting to commandeer other’s words to push their narrow, personal agendas. Instead I say ” comprehension is fundamental” going beyond reading, but through dialogue and questioning of the writer, to understanding. True understanding sometimes and often makes further response unnecessary. Too many try to respond authoritatively to what was never said in the first place, “reading into” something rather than comprehending the literal word. Leads to a whole lot of discursive “heat” and little cognitive “light.
